SUMMARY: Anitra Frazier, who is a legend in the community, joined us to share her wisdom about cat care. Anitra had many important tips and tools and they all shared one thing in common. You and your kitty will be happiest when you can be still, quiet, and just be with them. For example, Ruth asked the question about her kitty who loves being petted. Until she suddenly strikes out and bites! Anitra and Dr. Jean advised Ruth to just hang out with her kitty and avoid over stimulating (which too much petting can do).Anitra loves to consult with kitty parents all over the world and can be reached at: (212) 663-0122.

Takeaways:

  • Be there for your cat. Be responsible for how you are with your cat.
  • Think like a cat
  • Quietness and stillness
  • Sit in front of your cat and breathe very shallowly at them – notice if they love this. Gently touch and move their skin around. Gently tug on their hair. Gentle touches down spine. Stop if any hint of resistance.
  • Listen to your cat. Really listen. Be open to what they are telling you.
  • Look for clues. If there is an unwanted behavior, what happened just before? If cat bites when you are petting, was there a tensing just before that.
  • It’s good to leave cats wanting more (petting, toys, play) and asking for more.
  • It is ok to have negative thoughts. Do not try to hide them. Say “I’m so glad you are here. I’m so (fearful, upset, angry) right now. Just having you here makes me feel better. We are safe right now.”
  • Cats often act out when they lose control. They feel safe when in control. If they love being petted but get too excited about it, they lose control and then need to stop the petting by something (biting, running away, scratching).
