Good evening: I became a member of HA a couple of years ago due to my quest to educate myself about my cat Bella's renal disease. Since then I have been on quite the amazing journey as I continue to be her proud caregiver. Today, I come to you about her sister (litter mate) Maya, who I believe I have brought up before but might as well do the usual intake format. She had her annual wellness exam today and I am attaching her blood results.
1. 15 yrs and 8 months old 2. spayed 3. calico 4. 12-ish pounds (losing weight a little) 5. BEAM is a little lower than normal in the last week 6. VIVA raw rabbit, beef, or turkey 7. Had been receiving the BI/Merial Purevax rabies vaccine annually like her sister until last shot was in 2024 and I am no longer going to vaccinate, she is 100% indoors like Bella No other vaccine history 8. I noticed a few months ago she was at the water bowl much more than usual, almost happened out of the blue. I'll remind you her favorite owner, my husband Paul, died almost 1 1/2 yrs ago and that was and still is a major change to our home environment as we adjust to life with me and the cats. Also, last week she vomited her food which is very rare (her sister on the other hand I have dealt with on again and off again vomiting issues for the past few years now). I do think it may have partly been related to the VIVA duck I had been feeding her, and stopped giving that meat as it was also causing Bella to vomit last month as well and I stopped it for her. I think the duck is too rich for them at this age.
One year ago today in 2024, Maya's labs showed: Alb 4.6, BUN 33, Ca 11.0, Phos 4.5, Creat 1.5, T4 3/1, glu 134.
Today in 2025: Alb 4.1, BUN 30, Ca 11.4, Phos 4.6, Creat 2.2, T4 3.0, glu 132
To compare with her sister Bella who I have been treating her kidney disease with supplements, diet, homeopathy and energy modalities:
Bella Sept 2025: Alb 4.4, BUN 40, Ca 11.9, Phos 3.9, Creat 3.3, T4 3.8, glu 107 (By the way Bella had fantastic BEAM lately!)
Her vet, who treats Bella too (western med vet), left a message that he was concerned with Maya's kidney values and wanted me to consider a low protein, kidney commercial diet. That surprised me as he may have forgotten this isn't my 1st rodeo as I am a veteran with Bella's issues too. To my naked eye, Maya seems to be following in her sister's footsteps and I recall the good vets at HA suggested I didn't really have to go to a kidney diet so early in the stages of kidney disease, just make sure plenty of food variety and frankly, I am going to begin giving Maya the same kidney protective supplements I am giving Bella and seek homeopathic guidance as necessary with my homeopathic vet. Any encouragement you can offer or advice? It is sad to see this happen to Maya but I am devoted to helping them both remain comfortable and happy as long as I can. I do notice the western vets lean towards saying a low protein diet is a must for kidney cats. But, I decided to not feed just one type of a flavor of kidney cat food. Thanks!
