Here is an excerpt from one of my handouts about giving homeopathic medicines.

How are homeopathic medicines / remedies handled and taken?

*Homeopathic medicines should not be touched, or returned to the container, as it contaminates them.

*Drop a few drops of liquid medicines straight in the mouth or on a mucus membrane, or tip a few granules from a spoon, folded corner of paper, or the bottle lid into the mouth.

*Remedies need to be kept in a dark, cool place, away from strong smells and sources of electromagnetic radiation such as computers or microwaves.

*Medicines are best taken in a clean mouth free of strong tastes, ideally on an empty stomach or at least a half hour after eating.

*Medicines may be less effective if caffeine is taken within the hour; not a problem for most animals!

*Homeopathic medicines should not be taken at the same time as other medicines.

Will homeopathic medicine affect the use of other medicines?

The remedies will not interfere with conventional or herbal medicines. Some medicines, like steroids, tranquillizers and antihistamines decrease the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines. This is not a big problem when using the LM potencies, as you can just increase the frequency of taking the homeopathic medicine. X or C potencies will need to be taken more frequently and, ideally, an hour or so before the other medicine.

Allow as much time as is practical between giving conventional and homeopathic medicines.

What will happen after we begin using the homeopathic medicine?

Acute problems will show improvement fairly quickly, if the medicine is correct. Expect some improvement in 10 to 15 minutes, with significant improvement in an hour. If you are using X or C potencies, do not repeat the remedy until improvement stops. If there is no improvement in a hour, reassess the situation, and decide if the remedy needs more time or another repetition, or if it’s the wrong remedy. The wrong homeopathic medicine will do no harm, but it won’t help much, if at all.

Chronic and constitutional (whole body) cases are most gently and powerfully treated with LM potencies. Some chronic cases will have a temporary aggravation of their symptoms when using X or C, which is usually avoided with LM potencies. (The very rare aggravations with LM potencies stop very quickly when the medicine is discontinued.) LMs are taken daily, up to three times a day, long term. The dropper bottle is firmly thumped on its base eight to ten times before each dose, to minutely change the potency of the remedy. Often some symptoms will improve quickly, but usually the full action takes two to six weeks. If there is no change in that time, it is probably the incorrect choice. The correct homeopathic medicine will be taken, with decreasing frequency and /or in gradually increasing potencies (LM1, LM2 and so on), until the problems are cured. When the homeopathic medicine is no longer needed the body will usually show a very slight return of the old symptoms, which will disappear when the remedy is stopped. If the medicine is discontinued before it has finished its work, the symptoms will gradually come back. You can just resume the remedy for a while at this point, and let it complete the job.

Some individuals will eventually need a different homeopathic medicine, but it may be years before this is necessary. The only way to tell what the new remedy should be is to evaluate the case again.

How long do homeopathic medicines / remedies last?

Homeopathic medicines, if stored properly (dark, cool, clean, away from electromagnetism, in glass containers) can last for years. Some of Hahnemann’s original remedies have been used recently and they are still active. If in doubt, though, discard the medicine and get a new one from a reputable supplier, as they are quite inexpensive.

Fantastic Dr. Sara!

Thanks so much for sharing your awe-some handout.

In addition to everything in it Christine, my personal preference is to have patients dose at least an hour or two after any medication.

The reason is, according to VBS, that any anti-pathic drug (conventional meds) can worsen internal imbalance.

This "drug dis-ease" can then be improved by the homeopathic medicine dosing.

Hello - if the treatment calls for dosing twice a day, is it important to dose 12 hours apart? If once a day, is it important to dose at the same time every day?

With conventional medicines, it is best to give them spaced evenly apart, as that is how they are tested for absorption and efficacy. That means once a day dosing is as close to twelve hours apart as you can manage, twice daily as close to 8 hours apart as possible, and so on. You also need to be aware if the medicine is supposed to be given with food, or away from food (on an empty stomach), as that also affects absorption and efficacy.

Hi Christine-

I think Dr. Sara means that it's usually best to keep once a day meds, for important medications like pimobendan, to as close to every 24 hours as possible, twice a day to every 12 hours, 3x a day to every 8 hours, etc.?

This is based on pharmacologic test of blood levels and doesn't take individual variability into account.?

This is very different than dosing homeopathic medicines which are given prn (as needed) based on individual susceptibility and response.⚖

Thank you Dr. Jeff! I was brain burping when I wrote the dose intervals; corrected above.

Thank you both! :) Sorry I did not make it clear in my question - I meant homeopathic remedies.

You're welcome Christine!

Ah, then the spacing (of homeopathic medicine dosing) is not as essential.

Rather, it may be guided by the symptoms and responses as @JoannC recently learned by the timing of Teddy's Phos doses.
