1. Strider, 12, male
2. Neutered
3. DNA Test - 39% American pitbull terrier, 25% Australian cattle dog, and the rest is a mix of six other breeds.
4. 77 pounds
5. Behavior - normal. Energy - much more tired, doesn’t want to play like he used to. Appetite - normal/maybe increased? Hard to tell, he’s always and still does like to eat a lot. Mood - it might have changed but I’m unsure, I am home and with him 24/7 now so he doesn’t show the excitement he used to when I came home but he still does to go outside.
6. We’ve been trying out new fresh foods the last 9 months- farmers dog, ollie, and spot&tango, but I stopped them today as I read long term they can cause pancreatitis in dogs, he’s now on a wet/dry food combo royal canin diet.
7. He has his regular rabies vaccines when they’re due. He had the distemper vaccine once and one other I don’t remember so he could stay in a kennel for a couple days with other dogs. He just finished two weeks of antibiotics for his “severe generalized periodontal disease.” I also give him gabapentin - 1/4 the dose as the full dose caused his back legs to give out.
8. Excessive panting/breathing a year ago alerted me to a problem and I took him to the vet. He pants and/or breathes 60-80 breaths per minute for 20-30 mins 2-4 times a day. He was tested for Cushing’s, it was negative. He was on two adrenal balance supplements during the test, but the vet said they wouldn’t have an impact on the test so I didn’t take him off it for the test. He had most other symptoms and still does for Cushing’s, potbelly appearance, darken spots on the belly, hair loss, increased appetite? increased thirst.
9. I can’t tell. He used to pant more after a big meal but I feed him 4-5 small meals a day as recommended by a Google search. It seems to have helped a little, but it’s hard to tell. He still breathes rapidly a few times a day. I think the heat makes the panting worse.
10. We did an ultrasound after the Cushings test was negative. I uploaded the results of that.
11. A laparoscopic biopsy has been recommended but I wondered if removing the mass on/in his liver would be better instead of just a biopsy, to help his breathing?

His panting/rapid breathing is giving me intense anxiety because I don’t know if he’s in pain and I don’t know what’s wrong.
I want to know why he’s breathing so rapidly, if it’s from pain, Cushings, his liver problems, and how to help him?

Thank you for making your first detailed post, for doing so much research and trusting your instincts for your cherished Strider.

We will all chime in a bit more, but do not want to overwhelm you.

1. Have you taken the fundamentals course? Lesson one will help you with your " intense anxiety because I don’t know if he’s in pain and I don’t know what’s wrong." another help for that would be to buy Dr. Jeff's new book, Path to Pet Wellness. You will begin to see symptoms as good friends - clues to understand responses to treatments. One great help will be, for at least most of the day, to not worry. Just set it aside and focus on doing whatever makes Strider the happiest.

2. Schedule one of the Guidance Calls with Dr. Jeff (he is great with lab interpretations) or myself.

3. For a few weeks feed him any fresh people food he likes and only dog food if he wants it. Lesson 2 in the Fundamentals course discussed the species appropriate diet (not dog food, per se). sometimes that makes a big difference, then you can explore what to feed longer term.

4. For your concern about pain, you may want to consider asking an animal intuitive so listed to several we have had speak (Webinar - replay).

Dr. Christina
