Hi Dr. Jeff!
Esther: (our other dog background info)
Esther is from St. Lucia and is 3 yrs old 40 lbs. Her mom kicked her out of the litter, and she was found in the gutter with maggots on her. The rescue bottle fed her, and we got her at 7 months. She arrived with hip displasia. She has had one hip replaced already, and takes 12.5 mg of Novox every day for the other hip. Both hips look bad in x-rays, but her hip surgeon said one replacement may be enough for her as that hip may compensate. With the 1/2 a novox she seems comfortable and will still do some good runs at the dog park. She guards her hips and won't play with dogs who strike her as unpredictable or too big. We have insurance (healthy paws) and could do the other hip, but i figure it's best to avoid surgery if she seems to not be in pain?? She eats all fresh things like Socks, some raw, but eats a little more grain free honest kitchen in her diet than he does. She had normal puppy vaccines but will never get any more, just titres and is off all flea and tic and heartworm conventional meds, but we think will will give her heartgard 2 times a year in July and Oct. We live in VA.

Issues:
1. Her red blood count was elevated and it delayed her hip surgery. They couldn't figure it out; we saw an internal medicine doctor and she had ultrasounds of all her organs, her reticulites or something like that was elevated. She is 73% village dog, 13% rottweiler and 14% doberman, no breeds which run high red counts, but she is always fairly terrified at the vet, which could account for the elevation. It was never figured out, but everything else was okay, all the other labs, so there was no other diagnosis and they did the surgery and said she did great, better than all 3 dogs who were done that day. They said they could do bone marrow analysis but that its not conclusive for anything so we could just look at it like her red count runs high, and keep tabs on it. If you have any input on this we greatly welcome it :)

Hi Victoria-

Esther is one fortunate pup to have you as her mom! ? ? ?

Wow, genetically-nutritionally triggered hip dysplasia. :(

Have you tried using supplements that might help you reduce the Novox dose even further and maintain her BEAM (which reflects any hip discomfort)?

Regarding her "polycythemia" would you be willing to share any blood test results in this thread?

I would love to review them.

Dr Jeff, can you recommend things to replace the novox and what did you think of the bloodwork??

Absolutely Tory! There are many, many possibilities.

First though, I wonder what you have already tried?

Trixsyn, Boswellia, Glycoflex, curcumin, etc?

Supporting pups with dysplasia and arthritis will be great to discuss on Monday's (2/10) Empower Hour! webinar.

Regarding the polycythemia diagnosis, I'd love to hear more since Esther's tests look fine otherwise according to the internist report.

I'll review her 7/17 test results tonight.

Do you have anything more recent?

I don't think so but they just took blood for the heartworm test and she was calm, she's gotten better at the vet, so i should call and see if they have blood left over they could use to re-test that! The only product i have used is one anthony suggests on his website, Infinite pet supplement hip and joint advanced formula, with tumeric, curcumin, glucosamine, chondritin, and msm. If i stop the 1/2 , 25 mg novox per day, after a few days she starts to cry when getting up, and with that little pill she doesn't vocalize with getting up or down and does some good runs at the dog park each day, even though she runs like a rabbit:) Our vet said, unless we have reason to believe otherwise, which we don't at the moment, lets look at it like that's normal for Esther. What supplements should i try and in what order?? Thanks so much!!

Our vet said, unless we have reason to believe otherwise, which we don't at the moment, lets look at it like that's normal for Esther.

Vocalizing when she gets up and down and bunny hop type running are not normal.

I think that your Holistic Medical Decision Making protocol Step 1 goal should be for her external symptoms are 100% normal (for any dog).

Internally, I doubt that she'll ever be normal (her hips will always be bad) but the speed of progression of the bony changes seen on x-ray can definitely be altered.

However, the way that her body deals with the dysplasia is a more important factor for her quality of life.

X-ray changes, other test results or any diagnosis are not the most important thing. No single internal or external symptom is as important as BEAM.

BEAM directly reflects her quality of life.

Regarding specific supplements, that will depend.

It depends on her totality of symptoms.

BTW-Her blood test results look fine. Just like your vet said about her version of "normal" running, the hight blood count may also be her normal.

Did she have an earlier CBC for comparison?

Hi Tory.

The C6 is still relatively low in my opinion.

You absolutely can pursue further testing with the Cornell Multiplex which will give you more info and can do no harm (except to your wallet).

Personally, I'd pursue vitality-raising and immune boosting strategies as my next step.

You can also see what the vet specialist internists recommend for Lyme exposure without symptoms (basically monitor and retest):

IgG 200c is only available from licensed vets and human health care professionals, but there are similar "colostrum" type supplements available OTC.

LD (Lyme Dis-ease) Support, Glucamune from Rx Vitamins and CAS Options immune stimulating mushrooms are other options.

The Bottom Line is to focus on Esther's internal vitality and balance to improve her quality of life, dis-ease resistance and natural healing.

Okay i already bought a lot of those supplements and have been giving them to her along with an all raw diet. She looks great and does some really big runs at the dog park.

Which test do we do the monitoring with? The C6 or the cornell multiplex?

I don't want to spend money needlessly but we do have insurance that pays for labs for the dogs at 80%, and i just need to know which test to do the monitoring with and how often to test?

I will cancel her blood draw apt. for monday so i can hear back from you about what you recommend, and i will start to go after the new information you kindly sent. Thanks so much!

Sincerely, Tory Wen

Hi Tory.

C6 and urine protein for monitoring.

Both Lyme and arthritis are great topics for tomorrow (2/10/20) if you ask during the webinar.

Got the link! 8 pm ill be there!
Can i add a question about my boy socks, the pit bull chihuahua, i have to express his anal glands like every month, maybe that will go away with the all raw food, his poop is way more firm already, they sure love the chicken and all the bones, but that is one question, and # 2 is i cut up the raw chicken so they won't drag it all over the house, is that okay regarding the bones, i feel a bit afraid they will choke on them or something....

Thew vet wants to do this right away for Esther should i do these now and wiat a while for the C6?

Urinalysis + UPC (will check for protein loss in urine from glomerular nephritis)

2. Bloodwork CBC/CHEM15/SDMA (will check for kidney function)

thanks i so appreciate your help, i need to learn homeopathy next.

Great that you can be with Drs. Sara, Jean, myself and trainer Lisa Waggoner!

You definitely can ask about socks.

Now's a good time for the baseline blood and urine tests.

A great place to start learning homeopathy is with the full weekend homeopathy seminar recordings in your member area.

Perhaps also start by reading more about the 4 Awe-some As that are very valuable for emergencies.4 Awesome As.png
