@Dr. Jeff

Smudge, a 6mth old rescue ate a 5in pencil piece, without eating the metal tip. He drank water after and an hour after had 1 1/2 cup Medical Medium heavy metal detox smoothie. He’s whimpered a little randomly and energy-wise he seems slightly less than normal but overall good. Do you recommend immediate vet care or is observation safe for a day?

Thank you,
Catherine

If his BEAM remains good and he's eating and not vomiting you should be safe to see your vet when they open.

When's dinner? Is he usually a good eater?

Thank you for the quick response! He’s an excellent eater and dinner is at 5:30pm.

We do not have an established vet yet. What I heard you say is he needs vet care for eating a pencil but it’s safe to wait till the morning, as long as his BEAM is good and there’s no vomiting. Is there anyway to help him without vet care? I ask because of vaccination reasons, a vet in our area said he’d want to give him ALL his vaccines in one visit. I know in my heart that’s a bad idea for this dog, he’s really sensitive already!

Okay, thank you! We’ll watch his BEAM closely and reassess if anything changes. How would a vet treat this situation? If we do take him in, I’d like to make informed decisions about his care.

Check out this article on how to find holistic vet care, locally and virtually. That is a super good first step.

Have you listened to the welcome video to see much of what we offer at HA?

Are you keeping a journal? Download a great one here as a member benefit.

And be sure to take the 101 course which will help you evaluate BEAM, Early warning signs and to do HMDM so you have an easier perspective about making ER decisions.

Thank you for this article. I listened to the welcome video. I journaled for a couple weeks till I could read his communication & patterns. I took 101 course when he first arrived and found it helpful.
