Hello HA! My tiny dog Kiki has a bacterial skin infection that won’t seem to clear. She went through two rounds of clavamox and also a topical mousse that totally burnt her skin. Unfortunately we didn’t get a culture of the bacteria at the onset of her issue. Now the vet has prescribed Clindamycin Hydrochloride oral drops. I’m not familiar with this antibiotic. It seems to have a few warnings associated with it, including a side effect of bloody diarrhea. I would like more info on this med before I give it to my 5.5lb dog. Is there anything I should be concerned about with this drug? Is it potentially more dangerous in terms of side effects compared to Clavamox?

I have been giving her a Chinese herbal blend called Immuno Balm by Gold Standard herbs to try to boost her immune system. And she gets Gussy’s Gut for some probiotics.

Attached are a couple of pictures of her skin from today.

Thank you!
Joanne

Hey Joanne!

Kiki is doing the best she can to clear her secondary bacterial infection (which looks like a "superficial pyoderma" to me).

The root of the issue is not the "infection" itself, but rather is an issue with her inner terrain and sensitivity (aka susceptibility).

This is the same sensitivity you saw when her skin got burned by the mousse.

The answer lies in optimizing her inner terrain to get her into tip TOP (Terrain Optimizing Protocol) shape:

Yes, there is indeed a hierarchy of drugs. And clindamycin is indeed potentially more problematic than Clavamox

However, every anti-biotic is going to worsen her immune balance, microbiome and increase her susceptibility.

If you haven't read through the HA! 101 course recently, I highly recommend that you do so.

Also, Pau D'Arco liquid applied to her lesions will help her body clear the sores:

I've always subscribed to the idea that skin stuff is a positive thing; a step towards healing the entire constitutional picture. We can see it, we can get to it - and its resolution shows we are close to healing the whole animal. That said, it follows that suppressing these signs with drugs - or anything that is not energy medicine like homeopathy, TCM, visulization, etc., will impede the healing of deeper chronic issues, as Dr. Jeff said. Rejoice; she is close to total wellness:)

Thank you very much, Dr. Jeff.
