Mystery Lumps

Hello, my 11 year old pit mix has recently started developing these skin issues-see photos below. Does anyone know what they are? I have had them tested and they come back as a keratin based mass. The issue is they are popping up quite quickly now and growing quite fast. I'd love this groups wisdom. Thank you!

Picture B1, B2 and B3 are of skin tags he has had for a long time now. The one that looks red has been on him for years and it recently turned red. I thought he had scraped it on something while outside, and he may have, or it's because he licks it, or maybe its changing too, but it will look like its healing and then get red again--he is going to wear a donut for a while. The rest of the pictures show the new growths. B4 is the inside of the same leg that B5 is growing on too. Thank you! Melissa C

It's great to see you here. It's been a while.

Thanks for sharing these pics of your pup.

It's hard for me to say for sure.

The lesions look like three or four different things. Everything from simple sebaceous adenomas/warts to skin tags (which are really just big bags of keratin), dermatitis, etc.

Since you've already had them checked by your vet I primarily have one question.

What's that one question (actually, you can probably think of two or three)?

How’s his BEAM?

Right now, a bit low. In addition to the lumps he had started limping, and his low back and hind legs were painful too. I think my biggest worry were that the two were connected. He is on conventional pain meds for now. I am getting him cranial sacral and fascia release massages and they are helping.

I do have rehab exercises to do with him. I think I was just fearful that these skin issues were pointing to something deeper and that somehow they were related to limping.

Appetite is great.

Emotionally, he had been enjoying our time together.

Thank you for commenting! The skin “things” came up so fast it was scary. I had changed his food, so maybe there was something in that the did not sit well with his body.

Yes! We all live in a state of dynamic (and changing) equilibrium (and balance), so one change can affect everything else.

And how it does, depends on individual susceptibility.

Hi All, I will be leaving this beautiful, supportive and amazingly informative community for a while due to Fibi's passing. Before I leave, I'd like some clarity on how in the world these two dogs lived to the ripe ages they did? We are accustomed to saying 17 or 18 is a ripe old age. Thanks...
