Some dogs are genetically predisposed to copper storage disease because they have problems eliminating excess copper from their system. For example, Labrador Retrievers and Bedlington Terriers. However, I know of dogs like Havanese that have copper storage disease and they are not typically prone to it. It may be these dogs could handle diets of moderate copper but a high copper diet may be too much for them to handle. It could also be that their liver is compromised for some other reason making it less efficient at eliminating copper. The liver is very important for eliminating toxins but if compromised may not be working optimally. I personally believe anything in excess over a long period of time is asking for trouble. Unfortunately, many dog foods these days are very high in copper. I think it is good to be aware of this and rotate foods. Many people I know feed the same food for the entire life of their animal. I don't mean to sound like a broken record but I keep stressing the importance of rotating foods.

Thank you so much. SO, interesting enough, Steve's has less % of organ meat than NoBL or other more pricey ones(thus far), BUT the beef, which I have been feeding him, has the highest copper
Here are the averages for our test results of Copper:
Beef: 21.05 mg/kg
Chicken: 3 mg/kg
Turkey: 3 mg/kg
Turducken: 3 mg/kg
Pork: 7.4 mg/kg
White Fish: 3.1 mg/kg

Total organ inclusion is approximately 8%, with liver making up less than 5% of each recipe, which is considered on the lower end for organ content in raw pet foods.

Our food is tested regularly to ensure it is balanced and meets AAFCO recommendations. Vitamin and mineral levels are tested every 3 months, and full nutritional panels are conducted every 6 months. All test results are posted publicly on our website, so you can review the values at any time and share them with your veterinarian if they have specific nutrients they would like you to monitor or stay below.

Copper accumulation can definitely trigger liver enzyme elevations. However, no they don't cause it. The root cause is a mitochondrial and energy flow issue which renders the liver cells susceptible to copper toxicosis (and other dis-eases).

Thank you so much. I will read after work. The food Carnivore is a brand? I had asked companies about organ %, but I’ll ask about copper %. Ugh and I only feed him single ingredient treats; half of which are beef organs freeze dried

Liver treats can quickly add up for a small dog, especially if the dog already has liver in his diet. One thing that could help is switching to single ingredient meat treats vs using organ meat.

I will stick to salmon or fish treats and get rid of the organs. ugh. and if I look at the freeze dried version of Steve's which she mentioned to get accurate numbers, it is higher.48.7 mg/kg as opposed to the turducken recipe at just over 9. I will switch. I just have so much of the beef left

Also note it mentions that in Europe (FEDIAF) there is a maximum copper level required for pet food but there is none in the US. The Truth About Pet Food has posted articles about the attempt to get AFFCO to establish a maximum but they refuse to. Even if the food has appropriate levels, liver treats can easily exceed the maximum.

I know I need to take several approaches, but is this worth it? I saw that and want to re-watch it. I am trying to be calmer when i get home and love my buddy even more than I already do. I am going to change his food from high copper to lower source like turkey. Would I have to use this in conjunction with your product (which strikes me as something-the ingredients- that would cause runs rather than help with constipation-one of the things you mention on your site)

I agree with not giving him artificial supplements, but the 2 you sent are not articial, corrent? Should I skip them-any liver detox supplements? I want thinking of giving him drops of milk thistle and slippery elm. Please let me know your thoughts.
