Late night vomiting

F

Frances

Hi, i have written in another thread regarding vomiting of my now 9 month old Maltese. He has had a liver shunt surgery ( about 3 weeks ago) and kidney stones removed related to the shunt, and has since been doing well....except that he has continued with his vomiting either every night or every other night, and some night he does not vomit at all

I feed him at 730/8pm at night and then give him a treat at 830/9 pm at night and then he retreats for bed at 10pm. He is on a bland diet of sweet potatoes and ground chicken or ground turkey (pureed) and will be on this diet till after he has his acid bile test to confirm how much the shunt has closed.

He often wakes up around 130am -2am heaving and then vomiting bile...yellow foamy liquid. The other night he vomited several times and had diarrhea and we took him to the emergency room. They took X-rays and did not find anything and gave him some probiotics and a medicine ( anti nauseas) to stop the vomiting. This morning at 6am he began to heave and threw up a mall amount of bile and then was fine. But normally he will throw up in the wee hours of the night.
My dog is active, happy and eats well, and I think if he could he would eat more.
I spoke with the surgeon who did the liver shunt surgery and she feels this is does not correlate with the shunt and feels we can look into getting another ultrasound done, blood work or seek an internal specialist, or holistic medicine. She doesn't feel this was consistent with Billious vomiting syndrome as the vomiting begins in the middle of the night.
I have contacted the holistic specialist about 75 mins from us and his fee is rather costly, especially after paying out for a liver shunt surgery. I plan to contact the holistic vet that is at our veterinarian and see what they suggest. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you..

Hi Frances-

I'm glad that surgery went well, but am sorry to hear about the continued vomiting.

The evening vomiting is actually a very good sign!

Why?

Because it indicates that your pup still has enough Vitality to make this symptom.

Sometimes surgery weakens the body and decreases cellular energy so much that the body is not even able to create symptoms.

To understand this relationship between energy/Vitality and symptoms, it may help to think of symptoms as the language of the body.

In order to "speak" your pup needs to be sufficiently Vital.

Age, stressors and symptom suppression weaken Vitality.

The "loudest" symptoms, and highest Vitality, are often seen in kids.

That's why they tend to have high fevers.

Click/tap here for the article that discusses talking to your pets through their symptoms.

The very best way to evaluate and resolve symptoms is by putting them in context using homeopathy.

Unfortunately, managing a complex case like your pup's requires the 1:1 help of an experienced vet homeopath.

And as you said, this can get pricey.

In lieu of your contacting a professional, your local holistic vet definitely can advise you on ways to work with your pup's body to support it while healing occurs as best it can.

These would be physiologic vs. energetic modifications.

For example, you might find that 1/8 of a cup of aloe vera juice in each meal is helpful.

Or changing probiotics, adding a pre-biotic like Floraphage, etc.

It also could be very helpful for you to continue learning more about Vitality, Balance and homeopathy in the Jul 27-28 seminar.

Thank you Dr Jeff. I truly am grateful for your response. I have made an appointment with our veterinarian Holistic vet for this coming Wednesday . I appreciate your advice and suggestions, and I am looking into the floraphage. I have begun giving Harpo 3ml of celery juice on an empty stomach each morning ( as of today) and hoping this will offer some relief. I will add aloe vera juice to his daily food intake as well. Thank you also for the offer of attending the seminar on line for free. I am truly grateful and look forward to learning more to help and healmy pups. Thank you again :)

You're welcome Frances.

Before you start the aloe, let's evaluate the effect from the celery juice.

Changing just one thing at a time will help you determine what's helping Harpo.

Also, Frances, you may want to contact some of the homeopathic telephone consulting veterinarians as they may actually be less than your 90 min away "holistic" vet.

Homeopathy is the most powerful way you will be able to help Harpo, and as Dr. Jeff said, this would need the skills of an experienced veterinary homeopath. And you may not need to do the ultrasound and blood work at this time if working with the homeopathic vet.

Thank you Dr Christina. I have posted an updated thread titled, Update on Harpo, my pup, which tells of a great change health wise. I appreciate all the knowledge both you and Dr Jeff have shared, and it is good to know I can always book a telephone consolation with holistic vets. :)
