Hello,
Hi Dr. Christina, I’m hoping you can help with Bubba or point me in the right direction. He’s about 6 years old and stopped eating Thursday night. Saturday night into Sunday morning, he vomited four times, so we took him to urgent care yesterday.
They did bloodwork, including checking his pancreas and kidneys, as well as X-rays, and thankfully nothing significant was found. They gave him fluids, Zofran, and Cerenia for nausea. He hasn’t vomited since, but he still seems very nauseous and has absolutely no interest in food.
When I offer him food, he’ll smell it, then lick his lips, shake his head, and walk away. He has also been doing a lot of head shaking and lip licking in general.
The ER doctor did examine his mouth and didn’t see anything visibly abnormal, but given his dental history, I’m wondering if his mouth needs to be evaluated more thoroughly with dental X-rays to see if there is something going on beneath the surface.
Bubba had dental surgery a couple of months ago and had both of his canine teeth extracted. He really hasn’t been the same with food since then. He used to eat with so much enthusiasm and practically ravenously, and now he doesn’t seem to have the same desire to eat. I’m concerned there could be some lingering oral discomfort in addition to the nausea.
The urgent-care vet said that if he doesn’t start eating or improve within 24–48 hours, they recommend an ultrasound. He does go into our garden, although our gardener removed the toxic plants, so I’m also wondering whether he could have eaten something that caused a gastrointestinal reaction. He gets EXTREMELY nauseous in car and foams at the mouth drooling. I feel so bad for him.
I tried Nux vomica, but it didn’t seem to make any difference. I’m also trying to work with a homeopathic veterinarian, but I can’t find the email you previously sent me with your homeopathic vet recommendations.
Could you please send me the name/contact information again? I’d really appreciate it. I’d also love to hear your thoughts on what could be causing Bubba’s symptoms, particularly the head shaking, lip licking, and refusal to eat despite the anti-nausea medication.
