Hello -
Today after a routine chiropractic appointment the vet pointed out that my senior chihuahua mix named Xia may be dehydrated (her gums are a bit sticky). I am not alarmed since Xia's BEAM is very good and over the past 3 days she walked about 12 miles. I am going to make an appointment to discuss this and other symptoms with dr. Jeff, but in the meantime I wanted to boost Xia's hydration. The local vet recommended Pet-A-Lyte Oral Electrolyte Solution but Xia is put off by it (never before did I see my dog who will eat any crumbs of food found on the street make a face after tasting Pet-A-Lyte)! Are there natural alternatives for electrolytes that may be appropriate to give a dog? She always has access to clean water, but would it be OK to offer some coconut water?
Xia is on a raw food diet that is 80% protein including organs and bone. I am wondering if I should increase the percentage of vegetables and fruit to the diet. I have seen people make chia seed slurry that they add to the food. Has anyone had experience with it?
I was also thinking about incorporating cooked mushrooms into her raw food diet? I remember listening to a presentation that talked about beneficial nutrients found in mushrooms that come from water but I am not sure how to prepare them so that a dog may digest them?
I welcome all suggestions! Thank you in advance.
