1. Ralphie, Male, 10 y/o
2. Neutered
3. Poodle/Chou Chou/Greyhound mix
4. 64 Lbs
5. What's their BEAM (rescue high anxiety, but super loving, usually very energetic and very sleeply after play, LOVES food, overall happy to be around his family)
6. Honest Kitchen grain free chicken with medical medium supplements and some heavy metal detox smoothie as well as occasional fruit snacking
7. Vaccination history (up to date but giving less vaccinations now) / exposure to toxins (pesticides likely over time even when we try to mitigate), other medication (Gabapentin, rimadyl and antibiotics just for this week)
8. Ralphie started to exhibit symptoms of Cushings about a year ago, but it took until last week to diagnose his condition. We went down a ton of rabbit holes, even performing surgery on a benign lipoma that we thought was sarcoma last November. He's always loved food as a rescue and would throw up bile if not fed every 6-8 hours, but otherwise extremely happy and healthy. He would get 3-4 walks a day and looked forward to it as well as Frisbee play dates. He started to have some hip issues and then started crying for food like crazy. His weight stayed the same despite us feeding a lot more and even dropped. He had one or two urination accidents in the house, but other than that was normal. This past month had really deteriorated where he stopped wanting to go on walks and his coordination would somewhat falter, especially on stairs. We no longer let him jump on beds and he's very tired. He has all the classic presentations of Cushings and they just did an ultrasound that showed the tumor on his adrenal. They said that surgery would be possible, but not without complications and they do see some masses/lesions on the spleen they are concerned with as potential metastasis. They do feel if there is no metastasis and the tumor is operable Ralphie could have a happy and healthy life for 1-4 more years.
9. He is definitive more sensitive to heat and gets excessive panting at night when this happens and has to move and we lower the AC
10. Diagnosis is cancerous tumor on the adrenal gland causing cushings
11. Current and previous treatment.
12. Hoping to just understand holistic treatments for this condition as we look at all angles. We may pursue a CT scan just to understand if the cancer has metastasized and to see if the tumor is even operable, but my goal is to give Ralphie the best quality of life for the time that he has and cushings had really ruined that quality of life, even though his spirits are strong and he is trying to go on a walk or two and goes on our paddle board and pals around with love. Trying to understand less invasive holistic approaches that might give him that quality of life without surgery or medications, but really in the dark on what might be right.

Ralphie is blessed to have you focus on quality of life. Yea for paddleboarding. Do whatever he loves. do a happy dance around him. Sing around him, etc. Search for the Happiness Protocol on the site.

First step with a serious ailment is to create your holistic health care team. Read this article carefully and follow the instructions to go to the different websites, then how to best select several veterinarians. There are several homeopathic veterinarians who can do virtual consults as your main treatment method. You may want a holistic rehab vet who can help with muscle strength, or a chiropractor or osteopath.

Schedule your 15 minute call with Dr. Jeff or myself.

Do take the 5 lesson pet health 101 class, too.

Download the Healthy Dog Journal which will allow you to know which approaches are helping the most as sometimes, in the process of healing, one or more symptoms may worsen.

Keep asking questions and loving Ralphie as you are doing.

Hey Lauren!

I'm sorry to hear about Ralphie's Cushing's dis-ease and his possible adenocarcima.
Hoping to just understand holistic treatments for this condition
Wow, there are so many and choosing among them can be overwhelming.

A great place to start is with the root of the tumor. Why did it start, and continue to grow (possibly since Ralphie's symptoms began)?

That's actually one answer that we know because it is the same for all cancers.

The fundamental issue is a breakdown of a critical function of the immune system called immune surveillance.

To understand immune surveillance, imagine your body as a high-security building. It's protected by a constantly active security system (your immune system) that has two main ways of keeping you safe
.
1. Patrolling and identification
  • Think of immune surveillance as the security guards (immune cells) continuously patrolling every part of the building (your body) looking for anything suspicious.
  • These guards are experts at spotting signs of trouble, like:
    • Germs (like bacteria and viruses): If an intruder like a bacteria or virus tries to sneak in, the guards quickly recognize them as foreign objects because they have different identifying badges (antigens) than the normal people working in the building.
    • Cancer cells: Sometimes, the building's own workers (healthy cells) can go rogue and start acting abnormal or become unhealthy. These cells may also display unusual identification badges, signaling to the guards that they're a potential threat.
2. Response and elimination
  • Once a threat is identified, the immune system launches a targeted response, which can involve different types of immune cells:
    • Natural Killer (NK) cells: These act like the building's rapid response team, quickly detecting and destroying infected or abnormal cells on the spot without needing prior training.
    • T cells (including Killer T cells): These are like the building's specialized forces. They get "trained" by other cells (antigen-presenting cells) to recognize specific threats and are very effective at directly eliminating infected or cancerous cells.
    • B cells: These cells act like the building's weapons manufacturers, producing antibodies which can disarm the threat or flag it for destruction by other immune cells.
So, in essence, immune surveillance is your body's way of constantly keeping a lookout for any threats, whether from outside invaders or internal problems like cancer cells, and then launching a precise attack to neutralize them and keep you healthy

The immune system, like every other part of the body, requires the proper information to function normally. This information flows throughout the body along with cellular energy.

The good news is that there are simple, fun and intutive way to balance the energy and information flow in the body.

And (wait for it)... that's what we teach at HA!

A great place to start diving into this approach to help bring Ralphie's BEAM back above 8/10, and to potentially slow the growth of the tumor is at:

If you haven't already done so, perhaps take a look at the info there. Then ask any other questions here on the forum, watch some of the webinars about cancer, and schedule the 15-minute Holistic Medical Decision-Making call with Dr. Christina or myself.

Let's explore what is possible for Ralphie's health span over the years...
