  1. Maggie
  2. 12 yo Female spayed Akita 60 lb
  3. No appetite, bright eyes, alert, weakness in hind end and constipation.
  4. She has been on a diet of 25% protein, salmon, chicken, , 25% oatmeal/quinoa 25% kibble, 25% vegetable. Supplements are: egg shells, earth animal tick program, ellevet
  5. Fullly vaccinated
  6. Because of the weakness in her hind end and she stopped eating her vegetables and rice, we were advised to introduce raw foods to her diet such as lightly cooked chicken, and raw organic. We started a day ago, and she stopped being able to defecate.
  7. we do not know whether the introduction of lightly cooked foods, change of diet, could have accelerated her inability to defecate and weakness worsening in her two hind legs.
  8. X-rays and blood work ruled out arthritis and organ damage. Could be neurological.
  9. Current treatment is ellevet.
  10. No other health concerns

Laura, you are certainly facing some major challenges with Maggie, especially if they are neurological. Is she constipated with big hard stools she cannot push out, or is she not pushing at all? Each would have a different approach to help.

Introducing the raw food should not stop her from defecating.

Have you searched for a chiropractic, osteopathic, TCVM (acupuncture), Rehab or homeopathic vet local to you? They can do a much more holistic evaluation of what is out of balance and causing the problems. If none near, then homeopathic vets can consult by phone.

How long has she had the weakness in the rear?

I would introduce some probiotics (yogurt, kefir, pet probiotics), maybe some canned pumpkin if she will eat that, the meats, maybe some dairy and some egg (cooked or raw).

For general support, I would schedule some Reiki treatments (can be done long distance), give some Rescue Remedy (carried at all health food stores and many grocers and pharmacies) - put 4 drops in an ounce of water and rub on her ear flaps, drops in her mouth, some on your hands, then rub all over, some where she sleeps. These may help regardless of her problems.

she is constipated with big hard stools she cannot push out. Last night and today she was straining.
We ordered an Assisi Loop that should come on Wednesday. We have not contacted a homeopathic vet, and we are willing to do so by telephone.

Thank you for your recommendations for rescue remedy and canned unsweetened pumpkin. We will try to pick up at a local store. And look for an acupuncture treatment in addition to the Assisi Loop.
She may be in pain, which could be a reason for her not eating.

Nothing more to add, but yes to raw meats, yogurt or kefir, perhaps some collagen powder in milk or broth, eggs - all helpful. Massage, even by you, to the belly, lower spinal area, hips and thighs. Can she walk a bit, perhaps with a sling to assist? This should help stimulate.

When they're really stopped up, my go-to is good old Vaseline. It is too big to be digested so remains inert; will melt and slurp around the poop and (hopefully) grease the skids for it to come out. With a big dog it would take quite a bit, but maybe worth a try?

I'm laughing trying to imagine getting Vaseline up a cat:) Actually, with dogs I have used olive oil in a syringe successfully. How are her anal glands? Could a little blockage there be slowing down the poop?
