Cat chronic cough

Hi all, my male year and a half old Abyssinian cat Neo (neutered) is around 14 lbs and has had a chronic cough for a little over half a year now. It sometimes improves, sometimes worsens. I follow Medical Medium the closest I can when it comes to diet and supplements because it is what I find the most trust in from experience, and I am open to your advice as well. He has been receiving Pet Wellbeing Lung Gold (7 drops twice daily) for 5 days now and has showed improvement but today has gotten bad again. I am aware it may take some more time I just don’t like sitting around waiting while he is suffering and looking for any additional help from you. I also give over 500mg of Vimergy Micro C. His BEAM is overall pretty good. He gets bursts of playful energy and sometimes it won’t trigger coughing, sometimes will on different days. He purrs a lot and we connect very well, have physical touch often and play hard when we can. He has been getting Feline Natural for months now, but I’m thinking about switching him back to raw grass fed beef and add egg free Alnutrin to meet his remaining nutritional needs. I give him freeze dried chicken hearts, wild blueberries, bananas, organic broccoli, organic celery. Medical Medium recommends these things and I know how amazing the healing properties are, so I give them to him and he does enjoy it. No vaccinations ever and never plan to. The only toxin exposure I think he’s really had is from clay litter which I switched off of in May, and now use Fukumaru tofu/applewood litter (thinking about switching to Smart Cat grass litter). I do have strep, EBV and possibly other viral load from the environment myself as I struggle with chronic symptoms as well. I try my very best to keep our environment germ-free (wash my hands and bedding, vacuum etc constantly), but we live together in a small space. He has never had any conventional medications, only remedies like Vimergy Propolis, Micro C, Zinc, B12 etc. I have a few homeopathic remedies on the way that I plan to give him completely separately (not even on same days) and in very small doses to see if they help. Boiron Pulsatilla, Phosphorus, and Carbo Vegetabalis that I read all are great for respiratory, spasms etc (his coughs seem spasmodic). I also have NHV Resp-Aid and Pet Wellbeing Respir-Gold on the way to try separately. He currently is having multiple coughing fits a day where he lays completely flat on the ground, neck always very extended and it is a wheezing sound, with a crackle at the end but not always. Exerting force during play or just in general seems to be a trigger but sometimes he can play full force and nothing happens. Just depends on the day. His breathing is noticeably heavier unless he is deeply rested. He does seem happy still overall, not completely miserable. The coughing fits do annoy him but he usually gets right back up and acts normal afterwards. I’ve always felt it was the litter that caused this but then I start to think it could maybe be viral. He does get a small amount of brown eye boogers and he itches himself on the neck occasionally but not often. I’m not sure what the underlying cause is and I’m hoping to find a solution because it is heartbreaking seeing him go thru it. He is the sweetest, funniest, best cat ever and I’ve had him since he was old enough to adopt. I have not taken him to the vet because I know they will just prescribe steroids, antibiotics, inhaler which I really don’t want to put him on but if it doesn’t get better within a few weeks I will take him at least for X-Ray. I do know about Dr. Silvia Do Valle holistic vet which I think was MM recommended in the past according to my sister, but I need to see if she is homeopathic as well. Any help is so very much appreciated, he really deserves for us to help him kick this thing for good. Thank you!! 🙏🏼💚 @Dr. Jeff, @Dr. Christina

What a cutie! He is so blessed to have you as a mom.
I will let Dr. Jean chime in on cat litters. No perfect one and it changes.

Because he is so young, and the cough is so persistent, in spite of the temporary fixes you have tried, be sure to read the lessons in the holistic health class.

Lesson One focuses on the value of symptoms, like the cough, as an indicator of the internal balance - Neo's is definitely off balance.

I would strongly recommend working with a homeopathic veterinarian who will carefully listen to all symptoms, even tiny ones like hair ball, or eye discharge, etc, and find the ONE remedy out of 7,000 + that fits NEO, not merely "good for a cough". Then you will follow up, and maybe change remedies, until the cough is gone, he is full of energy. Then he will have a better chance of an illness free long life.

Though Chinese medicine is equally good when done wholistically, homeopathy is much easier for cats.

There are a number of other homeopathic vets as well.

Welcome Samantha!

Thanks for making your first post about you sweet baby boy! As Christina said, he is super smart, handsome and regal.

Have you considered toilet training for him? That would greatly reduce his need for any litter.

Yes! It would be great to get an exam and x-ray. However, what you then do with the information does not need to be drugs.

Does he have coughing fits that last for more than 3-5 minutes? Does he cough multiple times/d?
Any help is so very much appreciated, he really deserves for us to help him kick this thing for good.

Yes, yes, yes! He deserves the best.

Using a snuffle mat to help clear his lungs and improve his Vital Capacity is one of the first actions you can take.

Try using a favorite treat like crumbled freeze-dried turkey hearts.

And yes, the homeopathic remedies you picked are great "cough" remedies. And there are a few hundred more...

As Christina advised, now would be the perfect time to add a well trained and experienced vet homeopath to his vet care team!
