Feline Asthma and Nausea

Hi all, I am new to the forum. I joined because I am looking for some insight on my cats symptoms.
M (female) and G (male) are 3.5 years old. They were born in July of 2022. They had the normal vaccinations spread out over the first couple months but have not had any vaccines since. They were neutered/spayed in December of that year because they are from the same litter.

I'm facing two things with M currently:
M got diagnosed with asthma by our vet a couple weeks ago. Over her life, she's had a couple of honking fits, and she will go months with no issues. She does seem to breath a little fast when shes awake but resting her breaths per min is 28. We got her diagnosis via x ray after she had two episodes in one week. Her lungs and airways sounded clear but X ray showed "A mild generalized bronchial pattern with increased emphasis on the smaller airways is present throughout multiple lung lobes." We ruled out any heart issues. Vet wants to start her on prednisolone transdermal .05 ml/ twice daily while we train her on inhaler. I haven't started yet because I am nervous about side effects and wanted to hear others experiences. I am still open to trying it, but also wanted to try holistic remedies. We already use low dust pine litter, are 99.9% fragrance free, and vacuum at least every other day. Going to invest in a new air purifier as well. We ordered the Pet Health and Nutrition Center Respiratory Tonic. I had read about curcumin and krill combo for lowering inflammation, and also possibly spirulina but the vet shut me down when I inquired. Not surprised, although it sucks having to do some of this on my own and I'd like to find a holistic vet near me. Does anyone else have recommendations for possible asthma. thoughts on treatment etc?

The other issue I am having with M is it seems like she's picky here and there but I'm starting to believe its nausea. Maybe IBD/inflammation given her track record? Backstory: for the first year of their lives, I was feeding them a variety of Tiki Cat wet food, but switched over to raw food when M was having random diarrhea. She also had horrendous breath for a kitten which tells me something was off in her gut. We started feeding Viva Raw when they were 1 in 2023 (chicken, turkey, duck, rabbit). In 2024 when bird flu became concern we were lightly cooking the poultry but out of fear of cooking out the added vitamins and nutrients, started feeding primarily rabbit, with occasional venison and goat when Viva had specials. I miss feeding them raw poultry (I think they miss it too) but just too nervous. I would like to diversify again (maybe adding venison, lamb, beef from Lotus raw or making home cooked poultry meals for them balancing with EZ complete or alnutrin) as I'm sure feeding one protein from one brand isnt the best for their microbiome. We also give them 1 sardine weekly but are going to start them on powdered krill for omegas soon too. I ordered slippery elm and single ingredient baby food for her nausea.

Other than her occasional appetite issues, her energy and everything else is pretty normal, she's super playful. I don't plan to start her on all these changes at once because it would be a lot, but I am trying to come up with a plan to gradually introduce the herbal tonic, krill, spirulina, circumin, and possibly even 1-2ml of celery juice.

Any insight or recommendations would be super helpful. She is still so young and she is my soul cat so I want her to be healthy and happy for a long time. Also if anyone has any personal recommendations for holistic vet care in the connecticut area please let me know.

Oh and forgot to include- Shes a medium-long hair tortie and I think like 10lbs maybe. Only medication shes been on is one time she was on gabapentin for vet visit as it was the only way theyd be able to examine her since she was so stressed.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome, Caroline, and your 2 kitties are blessed to have you carefully observing and thinking about the best approaches. The following may seem a bit overwhelming...be patient with yourself.

First, since she is doing well in general, think if there was a cause for the sudden uptick of two episodes that triggered the vet visits. Your stress? Stress in the neighborhood? Less attention to them? New furniture? Etc. If obvious - resolve it. Sine she does feel ok in general and the episodes are short, do not bother her a lot and do not continue to increase in frequency, you have time to not start the drugs and to take the next steps.

Next, know that asthma is usually able to be completely resolves (along with any other problems) with homeopathy, other approaches and loving connection from you.

1 Listen to the welcome video
2 Read this entire article on finding and working with a holistic veterinarian. Dr. Jeff is accepting new patients to his homeopathic practice (virtual, mostly) if they are members of HA as you are now. I am available for general support.
3. Take the pet health course
4. Check out the article in the Library on Respiratory problems
5. Schedule your 15 minute guidance call with Dr. Jeff or myself
6. Increase the loving attention you are paying to both cats. Really connect and communicate. Fun, teaching tricks, exercise and more.

You are very wise to know "I'm sure feeding one protein from one brand isnt the best for their microbiome." You are trusting your instincts on not jumping to too many changes. Offer every kind of people food you eat to them to know what range they may have - and what will entice M to eat more. One cat I treated for decades would only eat broccoli when ill! for now focus on food (eggs, dairy (especially raw), fish, other meats) and general health boosters like the spirulina, maybe mushroom, etc. Often these can make them more picky, so try at a separate time from meal time. Hopefully in a few weeks you will have selected a veterinary homeopath and learned to focus on building vitality.

@Dr. Jean Hofve (our kitty expert)

Connecticut HA members - can you give any suggestions for CN nice vets for Caroline.

And to the vet stress - you can carefully work with her to love going to the vet (when you have a nice one to work with) - TTouch, animal communicators, slowly training her, examining her yourself, Reiki, flower essences and more. May take years, but well worth it. We have had many webinars on that. No gaba needed. Have you tried a house call vet?

Hey Caroline!

I'm sorry to hear about M's and J's symptoms and diagnoses.

It's easy, vet recommended, and alluring to dive into the weeds of a physiological description/label like asthma.

However the answers you seek may start with your reframing the conventional dis-ease label of asthma.
Does anyone else have recommendations for possible asthma. thoughts on treatment etc?
Yes, tons!! And there are lots of webinars about lungs, breathing, asthma, etc. archived in the HA! member area.

The beginning of the journey that will lead to greater vitality and balance, and less as asthma, starts with the actions described in the HA! 101 course.

And you will learn that coughing, peri-bronchial infiltrates (on x-ray) etc. are all secondary.

Other than her occasional appetite issues, her energy and everything else is pretty normal, she's super playful
Excellent! All of her symptoms, throughout her life, are murmurs of the quiet SOS that I describe in Path to Pet Welllness:

She is still so young and she is my soul cat so I want her to be healthy and happy for a long time. Also if anyone has any personal recommendations for holistic vet care in the connecticut area please let me know.
Ys, yes, yes! All the more reason to meet her body halfway by addressing her symptoms clues with a vet homeopath.

Where in CT are you? Is your current local vet open minded? For example, do they know that you fee raw?
