Wow!

I recently discovered an awe-some book, called "What is Life", by eminent physicist Edwin Schrodinger. He is one of the pioneers of quantum mechanics and a colleague of Einstein's.

In addition to winning the Nobel prize in physics in 1933, he was fascinated by the physics that underlie life (and prevent death). One biographical excerpt about him says:
"Schrödinger addressed the problems of genetics, looking at the phenomenon of life from the point of view of physics. He paid great attention to the philosophical aspects of science, ancient, and oriental philosophical concepts, ethics, and religion.[4] He also wrote on philosophy and theoretical biology. He is also known for his "Schrödinger's cat" thought experiment"

This is from his book about life. In it, he says that the current laws of physics may need to be expanded upon to explain life. The reason is that these natural laws do not explain how life can not exist.

The current state of science and the laws of physics say that any dynamic (living) system always moves toward maximum entropy (disorder) which is death. And that clearly this is not the case. He says:
“From Delbruks general picture of the hereditary substance it emerges that living matter, while not eluding the “laws of physics” as established up to date, is likely to involve “other laws of physics” hitherto unknown, which, however once they have been revealed, will form just as integral part of this science as the former”.

Wow!
