Dog's Nail is Bleeding

I looked down and saw blood all over my couch—turns out Sadie was bleeding from the tip of her nail. I think it must have happened when we went outside for one last loop before bed, since I also noticed little blood spots on the floor after where we were in the kitchen...

Earlier that evening, we did her scratch board for treats, but I didn’t see any blood then and she didn’t react at all. Now I’m wondering if the scratching weakened her nail and something outside finished it off?

I soaked her paw in hydrogen peroxide to disinfect it and wrapped it in gauze—idk if that was the right thing to do, but I will definitely be being more cautious with the scratch board in the future... I thought a dog would know when to stop to not hurt themselves, but maybe not?

Does anyone have any suggestions for nail wound care that I should be doing?

Thanks,
Audrey + Sadie 🐾

You may not need to do anything else. Unless of course the nail itself is out of place.

If so, or if it continues bleeding and is bothering her, then a vet exam is a good idea (they may need to pull off the nail if it it partially broken).

The scratch pad is a good thing and should not have damaged her nail.

Okay, thank you so much for that Dr. Jeff, that's good to know that she wouldn't scratch herself to bleeding on the scratch pad, it must have been something that happened outside in the dark. Her nail is healing up good! 🙏
