Best placement for water fountain and litterboxes for cats

Hi @Dr. Christina, @Dr. Jean Hofve and @Dr. Jeff,

Firs time cat guardians here! My husband and I read over the weekend that it's best not to place the water fountain close to the cat's food. My cat is on raw food, so we don't leave her food out 24/7, but she does get fed next to her fountain. (She doesn't drink often or much from the fountain, only occasionally.) We moved the fountain from the counter to the floor tonight, and she went straight to the fountain and drank quite a bit.

We have been dealing with her eating habits as well - we were wondering if the placement of the water fountain may have contributed to her drops in appetite. It also appears that she doesn't like eating at the counter anymore. Just tonight, she had no interest in her food until we put it on the ground. She didn't finish all the food but ate some.

We also read a FB post by a cat guardian that it is best to place the fountain and food in discreet areas where there's not a lot of traffic. Is that the case?

Additionally, she's also recently been using our sinks to relieve herself. We have three (uncovered) litter boxes for her - one in the living room, one upstairs, and one in our master bedroom. We wanted to make sure that they're evenly spread out. Would you recommend that we change locations?

We want to make sure we're doing these correctly because we are planning to adopt a few more kitties into our home!

[We have been working with Dr. Jeff on her BEAM, but I'm posting my questions here with the hopes that other first-time cat guardians can benefit from this post.] Thank you!

Thanks for your questions Christine! And thanks for rescuing Penelope and giving her a loving home.

There are two ways to answer them and I'll take a shot at both. Then I'll look forward to seeing what Dr. Jean says.

Yes, it often is best to have food and water in a quiet place. And not near the litter box.

However, this presumes that cats are "normally" fussy about these things. It is indeed very, very, common.

IMHO a cat an energetically normal cat will eat and drink just about anywhere...
