Hi everyone-

On tonight's (3/11/19) Empower Hour! webinar, veterinary homeopath Dr. Martha Lindsay will be joining us to discuss nutrients and toxins that effect your pets' (and our) mouth and teeth.

Some of this information is based on clinical findings by dentist Westin Price.

Dr. Martha has put a handout together with some references that we can discuss in this forum thread as well as live during the webinar.

Click/tap here for the handout.

Here is the information for the dental product that Dr. Martha mentioned:

The company is ActiveAgain.org in San Diego CA phone 1 866-784-2430.

I have not researched it or have personal experience with this product but it sounds promising...

Also, here are some (human animal-oriented) thoughts from Anthony William's blog post:

Oral Health Essentials

Taking Care of Your Gums and Teeth

Using an electric toothbrush is great for dental health. Two great electric toothbrush brands to checkout are Oral-B and Phillips Sonicare. The Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator is another great device that allows oxygen to reach the gums.

Nature’s Answer has a line of products including Perio-Brite Mouthwash, Perio-Brite Toothpaste, PerioRub for gum and tooth discomfort, and PerioCleanse oral cleansing concentrate which can be used with the Hydro Floss oral irrigator for maximum results. Lucky Toothpaste is another good product that not only remineralizes the teeth and gums, but also rebuilds enamel. This organic Brushing Rinse is a wonderful addition to your oral health routine. If you have advanced dental issues or want some other high-quality oral care product options, Living Libations produces very high quality oral health products including a great toothpaste, tooth powder, gum gel, enamelizer, gum drops, and tooth serum. All these product recommendations and more can be found on the personal care recommendations page on the Medical Medium website.

Healing Supplements

Spirulina is an incredible supplement that will help pull heavy metals like mercury out of the intestinal tract, while also remineralizing teeth and gums. It will not pull mercury out of any silver fillings you might have, it will only draw out the mercury that’s been creating havoc in your system for years. Sovereign silver helps fight against bacterial issues and is an overall excellent support for the gums and teeth. Check out Liposomal C or Ester-C for two great sources of vitamin C, which is incredible for both gums and teeth. If a dentist indicates you may have a low-grade infection, increasing the amount of Vitamin C you are taking can be very beneficial. Coenzyme Q10 and a probiotic are two other supportive supplements. A helpful herbal tea to try out is peppermint.

Healing Foods

Aloe vera helps prevent gum recession and tooth decay. On my blog, there are instructions on how to prepare aloe water and the incredible benefits of adding this into your diet. Papaya, like aloe vera, helps fight back against ammonia in the gut. And like celery juice, it helps raise your hydrochloric acid while protecting the teeth and gums. Radishes, apples, leafy greens, celery, onions, scallions, chives, cucumbers, sesame seeds, tahini, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, ginger, and garlic can all support your oral health as well.

Thanks Anthony as these same foods and supplements are also useful for our pets!

Dr Jeff, the above Nature’s Answer perio Brite toothpaste has xylitol in it, so that would not be ok for cats???? The receipe mmendations are for humans right? I am looking for a good toothpaste for my cat that can help with mild gingivitis or does the raw coconut oil work just as well?

Wow, what an awesome "grab" Jo Ann (about the Xylitol)!

You are 100% right that this toothpaste (or anything with Xylitol) could be toxic to pets.

I'll make sure Anthony knows.

If your kitties like and will accept you brushing with coconut oil that's perfect.

Sprinkle Neem Bark Powder on it to be even more effective and also act as an immune stimulant.

You can even sprinkle the Neem in their food and see if they'll eat it.

Another great vehicle for the Neem is Oratene gel massaged on the gums or used as a toothpaste.

You're welcome JoAnn.

Thank you!

Hello, Anthony also recommends aloe as a toothpaste for human. I am wondering if I can use fresh aloe gel to brush my cat’s teeth?

Aloe’s clear gel can be applied externally to soothe and relieve pain from sun burn, rashes, bug bites, scratches, and wounds as well as deeply hydrate the skin to prevent wrinkles and aging. It can also be massaged into the hair and scalp to stimulate hair growth and can be used as a toothpaste or mouthwash to keep the mouth healthy, clean, and free from plaque producing bacteria.”

Thank you!

if I can use fresh aloe gel to brush my cat’s teeth?
Sure! As long as it is accepted by the kitty and doesn't cause GI upset, like diarrhea or vomiting.

@Dr. Jeff
When I took my cat for a health check today, I could see when the vet checked her teeth that my cat is a little red at the edge of the gums at the back teeth and she has some plaque.

What foods and supplements are good that Medical Medium recommends for this?

And what can I do? I don't brush my cats' teeth. They are 13 and 14 years now.

Less than two years ago, both my cats had their teeth cleaned. But I'm not a big fan of putting them under anesthesia for that.

Anesthesia is quite safe now, even for older kitties.
One of our speakers said that merely rubbing the teeth with your finger will prevent plaque, and my personal dentist agreed.
Feeding big chunks of meat (heart, especially) or chicken necks/backs - anything that has them rip and tear and use the teeth as they are designed - will sometimes have plaque just fall off. Work now to have them LOVE having you look carefully at their mouth and teeth.

Rarely have I seen cats like fresh aloe.

this may be a clue for the need to balance the vital force with homeopathy, Chinese medicine, energy work, changing up the diet/exercise/time spent with them/etc.

What foods and supplements are good
Consider spirulina, Micro-C (Vimergy), and propolis (which you can also massage into the red areas of the gums).

Holding a raw chicken neck while a kitty gnaws on it is my favorite form of cat dental care (in addition to the big chunks of meat that Christina mentioned).

@Dr. Christina Thanks for metion 🙏 I was just wondering if it was still good to put my cats under anesthesia to clean their teeth.

Thanks for your suggestions, I will start by first getting them used to me looking at the teeth myself and trying gently to rubbing with my finger 🐱
