Hi @Dr. Jeff & the lovely team here.
My boy, Brad, has been doing brilliantly since he was diagnosed with CLL in October 2024. His condition remains stable. In September, he'll be 12. His BEAM is excellent. He is not on any medications. He gets play, sniffer walks & forest treks daily. He is a sensitive fearful dog but I keep his world happy, exciting & as low stress as possible.
Stress (caused from unexpected visitors, or vet visits) directly triggers periods of fatigue. Fortunately he hasn't needed to see the vet in 3 months, because his bloodwork has been stable.
He eats a homecooked whole food diet - veggies, fish, ginger, eggs, fruit, pork, chicken, beef, various meats... raw brisket bones, bone broth & the occasional meal of freeze dried raw.
When he was diagnosed, he had an ultrasound of his heart, a chest x-ray & they scanned the spleen & abdomen. The sonographer/vet, doing the procedure, suspected there was a tiny amount of fluid in his heart, but it was so small, they were unable to get a sample. The radiology team that analysed the results couldn't find anything of concern. They said his heart was normal for a large old dog of his age. He's a very fit athletic huntaway (a New Zealand breed). All his other results were normal. No enlargement of the spleen.
He sleeps on a big couch next to our bed. Lately, I've been waking up to hearing him licking his lips & then letting out a sigh or yawn early morning. The other night, he coughed/gagged. It was a one-off, so I assumed just some hair in his throat from his morning cleaning rituals.
This morning, a short time after eating his breakfast, he coughed the same way. He then rushed outside in the cold rain & started munching grass. I encouraged him inside & gave him a piece of food (he's not a big drinker). He ate that, but then rushed back outside, ripping grass from the dirt & eating as much as he could.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Could these symptoms be due to heart palpitations or nausea? He ate his breakfast just fine (with bone broth too), 20 minutes prior.
Previous post about Brad here, but probably don't even need to read. I've included most key info above.
