I would have some reservations about rawhide, depending on the source and composition. Many of the commercial products are cured with formaldehyde. Some research should uncover alternative items made without disturbing ingredients. My all-time favorite, of course, is/are real bones, more or less consumable and unchippable. These can be diet items, such as rib slabs from lamb, pork, veal, etc. and other large food items like turkey backs, or large chicken backs or halves. Depending on his size and power, I'd avoid knuckles, which just may be too large and dense. This is a classic "know thy dog" situation, so carefully observe how he handles them. I prefer a diet which leaves the dog nourished and also satisfied, if not plain tired out. And, gosh, "mess" may be worth it....
