Hi there! George is my 9-year old neutered tuxedo boy. I found him in a parking lot when he was about 8 weeks old and he's been my best friend since. He's a healthy weight of 14 lbs (long and lean) and hasn't been vaccinated since 2019. He eats a variety of canned and fresh food. Very playful, interactive, and curious but fearful of strangers.

George is dealing with two issues:
  1. He has been struggling with feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) since he was a youngster. When it flares, it is typically during stressful period (home renovations, vet visits) and is generally predictable. I try to keep his stress as low as possible and feed a wet food diet. I've used Animal Essentials Tinkle Tonic in the past with great success, but it hasn't been effective recently. He is currently in a flare without any obviously identifiable trigger (to me). Prior to today, George hadn't experienced a flare in over 8 months.
  2. In January 2025, George began experiencing frequent, sometimes bloody diarrhea. I did the Animal Biome gut microbiome test, which revealed an overgrowth of c. perfringens. A fecal PCR also showed c. perfringens with enterotoxin. I elected to forgo antibiotics and instead treated him with Animal Biome GMP GMP for Cats: Phages, Prebiotics, Probiotics | AnimalBiome as recommended by a vet. I also added pysllium husk to his food. His diarrhea took several weeks to resolve, but his stool has been normal since. I decided to run the fecal PCR again in July as I was feeling hopeful that we had conquered it, but was disappointed that the results came back positive for c. perfringens.
The ask: what supplements should I administer that might have beneficial/salubrious effect? He is currently taking psyllium husk, Animal Biome GMP, Nordic Naturals Omega 3, TEEF for Life Protektin42k TEEF-Protektin42+K Dental Kit - 2023

Welcome to HA! Elizabeth!!

Thanks for making your first post.

George is one handsome guy! He says that he's fine, and not to worry.

Yes, many!! I routinely recommend my Vit C++ and Fiber Detox, Cranberry powder, sometimes D-mannose, etc.

However, the root of FIC can not be addressed by any food or supplement.

Those are important for soothing physical symptoms.

However, they only address the physiological level.

My first recommendation is to work with a trained and experienced vet homeopath. Locally or virtually.

And try to read through the HA! member 101 course. Then post any questions that come up.

Hi @Dr. Jeff , thank you for the reply! Working on getting supplements and connecting with a vet homeopath. What are your thoughts on the c. perfringens infection? Is there anything you would recommend?

It depends on George’s individuality.

It probably will not even be a problem (and may even fully resolve) when his terrain gets balanced energetically by a vet homeopath.

As Louis Pasteur eventually said, The Terrain is Everything (and the germs are secondary):
