If you run out of food for your pets, check your fridge, pantry and freezer for fresh options. Eggs, sardines, chicken, meat, vegetables, fruit, cooked rice and oatmeal all work, try small amounts first if your pet isn't used to variety.

This is such a wonderful tip, Amy. The more fresh food (or even people canned in a pinch) the more we will learn each animal's likes and dislikes and the more flexible everyone's appetite will be.

I would add canned (or boxed) stocks than many keep in the pantry.
